Summary
Office to residential conversion
Location
City Centre, Bristol
Concept
Situated a short walk from Cabot Circus shopping centre in the centre of Bristol 25 new homes were created within this office to residential conversion. The original concrete clad office building had been vacant for a number of years and was slowly becoming more derelict. The design gave the building a new lease of life. Aluminium window surrounds acknowledged the form and detail of the original concrete cladding panels yet added depth and articulation. Timber and structurally glazed curtain walling at ground floor unify the site boundary and front of the building.
Due to its location at the edge of a conservation area Smith Maloney Architects Ltd undertook extensive negotiations with the local planning authority to develop a scheme that enhanced the quality of the existing building and improved the street scape.
